An 11-year-old boy in Bradenton, Florida is recovering in hospital after his pinky finger was bitten off by the family’s pet dog. According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the boy reached to pet the dog, which was in its cage, through the slots in the cage door.
The dog bit the boy’s left hand, completely severing the pinky and possibly breaking his forearm. The boy’s father then shot the dog multiple times, killing it – then he ‘retrieved the severed finger from the dog’s stomach,’ according to the sheriff’s office. The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Friday evening.
The boy was flown to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg via helicopter. There is no word whether surgeons were able to re-attach the finger. The sheriff’s office said the force of the bite may also have broken the boy’s forearm.
Deputies say an initial investigation supports the father’s account and they believe the incident was an accident.
The dog’s remains were taken into possession by Animal Control.
