In many African cultures, every part of a slaughtered cow is used. Nothing
goes to waste, not even the bones.

Following this tradition, a youth group in Nairobi’s Kibera slum is making
beautiful jewelry out of discarded bones from cows and goats. Under their
brand name “Victorious Bones” the group has an innovative way of making a
living by dealing with waste management — a huge problem in urban areas.

I – Word Understanding

1. Apart from being useful in terms of milk and meat, cow is also
considered as a sacred animal in some religions. In Orthodox
Hinduism, beef consumption is the most repugnant of all the sins
committed by a man.
2. Jewelries are basically used for adornment. But these days, some
people are attracted to jewelries as investment.
3. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese researchers
discovered and started cultured pearls. Pearls are
mainly used for jewelry, but did you know that pearls are also used
in cosmetics?
